Hi, I’m Manamaru, living in Kagawa.
Naoshima is becoming increasingly popular worldwide as an “art island,” but today I’d like to share a lesser-known issue—something you might regret not knowing in advance.

This isn’t about how to get to Naoshima or rent a bike. It’s about a hidden pitfall that could affect your entire visit if you’re not aware of it beforehand.

🚷 Important! There’s a Restricted Area on Naoshima Island

There’s a section of the island where cars and bicycles are not allowed to enter.
Yes, even though Naoshima is small and commonly explored by bicycle, there’s a part where you’ll need to walk.

This restricted zone is located in the southern area of the island, between the Chichu Art Museum and Tsutsuji-so Lodge. It’s a private road, accessible only to hotel guests and authorized personnel.

🚶‍♀️ Walking is allowed, but you must leave your bike or car behind before entering.

This area is part of what’s called the Benesse Art Site Naoshima.

🚌 Free Shuttle Bus Info

If you’re thinking, “Do I have to walk the entire way?” — don’t worry!
There’s a free shuttle bus operating only within this restricted area.

🕐 Important Notes:

  • Bus schedule may change without notice due to maintenance or museum hours.
  • Some buses are hotel guest-only, so be careful not to get on the wrong one.
  • Check the official museum websites for the latest bus schedules.

❗ Why Is This a Pitfall?

Because some of Naoshima’s most famous art spots are located inside this restricted area:

  • Chichu Art Museum
  • Lee Ufan Museum
  • Benesse House Museum
  • Valley Gallery
  • Yellow Pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama

Most tourists rent a bicycle at Miyanoura Port, the main arrival point for ferries.
If you try to go directly to Chichu Art Museum on your bike, you’ll hit the restricted zone and won’t be able to go any further without leaving your bike behind.

The same applies if you’re coming from the opposite direction, starting from the Yellow Pumpkin area.

So unless you’ve planned your route carefully, you might need to backtrack or walk long distances unexpectedly.

✅ Summary & Tips

  • Be aware of the restricted area near Benesse Art Site Naoshima.
  • Use the free shuttle bus when needed.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • Always check the latest schedules online, especially for the shuttle bus.

I hope this helps make your visit smoother and more enjoyable!
