How Do You Get Around on Naoshima?

The main ways to get around Naoshima are:

  • 🚶 On foot
  • 🚲 By rental bicycle
  • 🚌 By bus

However, some areas on the island are private property where bikes and cars are not allowed.
In those areas, you’ll need to use the Free Shuttle Bus.


Where Can’t You Go by Bike or Car?

🚫 The road between Chichu Art Museum and the Yellow Pumpkin (southern area) is private.
You cannot use bicycles or cars here.

To travel through this area, use either:

  • The Free Shuttle Bus operated by Benesse Art Site Naoshima, or
  • The Art Festival Express Bus (paid, limited-time only)

🚌 Naoshima Bus Options (4 Types)

1. Town Bus (Sunaokun)

  • Route: Miyanoura Port ⇄ Honmura ⇄ Tsutsuji-so
  • Fare:
    • Adults: ¥100
    • Children / Disabled: ¥50
    • Under 4: Free
  • Payment: Cash only (no change machine → prepare coins)
  • Runs: Around 10 trips per day (may vary by season/day)
  • Notes:
    • Timed with ferry arrivals, but may be full during peak times
    • Groups of 10 or more → please call ahead: ☎ 087-892-2299 (Naoshima Tourism Office)
    • Does NOT go to the art museums

2. Free Shuttle Bus (Benesse Art Site Naoshima)

  • Route: Tsutsuji-so ⇄ Benesse House ⇄ Lee Ufan Museum ⇄ Chichu Art Museum
  • Fare: Free
  • Frequency: Check the official timetable
    • During peak or holiday times: approx. every 15 minutes
  • Notes:
    • May not run on days when Chichu or Lee Ufan museums are closed
    • This bus or the Art Festival Express Bus is required for travel through private areas

3. Art Festival Express Bus (Limited-Time / Paid)

  • Service Period: Only during Setouchi Triennale 2025
    • Spring: Apr 18 – May 18
    • Summer: Aug 1 – Aug 31
    • Autumn: Oct 3 – Nov 9
  • Route: Miyanoura Port ⇄ Chichu ⇄ Lee Ufan ⇄ Benesse House ⇄ Tsutsuji-so ⇄ Naoshima New Art Museum ⇄ Naoshima Hall
  • Fare: ¥300 (adults), ¥150 (children)
    • Contactless credit card payments accepted
  • Runs: Around 10 trips each direction per day
  • Notes:
    • No service on Mondays (if Monday is a holiday, closed on Tuesday instead)
    • A special festival-only bus, different from the Town Bus

4. Hotel Guest Bus (For Benesse House Guests Only)

  • Who can ride: Guests staying at Benesse House only
  • Route: Miyanoura Port ⇄ Benesse House ⇄ Chichu Art Museum
  • Notes:
    • Not available for general visitors
    • Looks very similar to the Free Shuttle → check before boarding
